Support Police Oversight
On Monday, April 10th, the City Council will be voting on a letter to Mayor Condon that itemizes the topics they want him to include when his administration negotiates the city’s contract with the police guild. We haven’t seen the letter yet, but we’ve been told it will include independent investigative authority and independent closing reports for the Office of Police Ombudsman. Mayor Condon negotiating successfully with the guild is the ONLY way our community will get independent investigations and public closing reports, so this letter from City Council is very important!
Will you come to city council Monday night to show community support for the letter?
We’ve also been told that the Mayor believes that only a small group of individuals care about independent oversight and believe the voter mandate for independent oversight of police in Article 16 of the City Charter has not been fulfilled. Because of this misperception, when you testify (or sign-in) in support of the letter, please identify yourself either individually or as a representative of your organization rather than as a member of SPARC. We need to show broad community support for true independent investigative authority for the OPO as mandated by Article 16 of the City Charter–letting both City Council and the Mayor know that it is not merely a small group of people who are still waiting for Article 16 to be fulfilled. If you testify on behalf of your organization, it would also be helpful to mention how many members your organization represents.
